10 Most Under Rated Real Madrid Players
Angel Di Maria
And finally, put the drumroll! The most under-rated Real Madrid player is 27-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder Angel Di Maria. Apart from bringing glory to his country by scoring the winning goal in 2008 Olympics and winning 60 caps for his country, this 5’10” winger has brought glory to Real Madrid also. Scoring 36 goals in 191 appearances, he was part of the winning team that won 2011-12 La Liga, 2010-11 and 2013-14 Copa del Rey, 2014 UEFA Super Cup, 2013-14 UEFA Champions League, etc.
He was also the Man of the Match of the final match for 2014 UEFA Champions League and won the 2014 Olimpia de Plata award. Still, after achieving so much, he isn’t regarded as one of the top seeds for the club by many fans. Well, after reading and going through his whole career, a lot of people might want to reconsider that, and very rightfully so.
Coming in at the second spot on our list of 10 most under-rated Real Madrid player 29-year-old Croatian midfielder Luka Modric. Now, this man joined the club in 2012 and has made 129 appearances so far. He was awarded as La Liga’s Best Midfielder in 2013-14 and has been part of five winning moments for his team, including 2013-14 Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League. But despite proving himself as a major catalyst in his team’s win, we feel he hasn’t enjoyed that much appreciation for other star players of his team, which is a shame in itself.
27-year-old Portuguese left back player comes at number 3 on our list. Since his joining in 2011, he has made 55 appearances. He also helped his team win 6 major championships, including the 2011-12 La Liga, the 2012 Supercopa de Espana, the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup, to mention a few. Now, we feel that he has been overshadowed by some of the biggest names in Real Madrid, and that’s what has kept him out of the ‘big league’, but it might very soon change for the good.
The fourth most under-rated Real Madrid player is 35-year-old English striker Michael Owen. Many people might not remember his Real Madrid career, but take this – In his 1-year tenure with the club from 2004-2005, he scored 13 goals out of 36 appearances. If that’s not impressive, we don’t know what is! By the way, did we mention that when he started playing for England in 1998, he was England’s youngest player and youngest goal scorer at the time. Just mentioning!
23-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro comes next at fifth spot. One of the newbies, his tenure in Real Madrid has started in 2013. But, even from his 13 appearances so far, he has proved that he is forced to reckon with. A contributing member of the winning team of 2013-14 UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey, this Latin fella could very well become the next big thing in football.
Grabbing the sixth spot on our list of 10 most under rated Real Madrid players is French striker Karim Benzema. Now, listen to this, he has scored an outstanding 87 goals for the club from 188 appearances since his joining in 2009. He was part of the winning team of 2011-12 La Liga, 2012 Supercopa de Espana, 2014 UEFA Super Cup, and what not? But guess who still is under-rated? Yeah, you guessed it, right!
The 7th most under–rated Real Madrid player is 32-year-old Spanish right backer Alvaro Arbeloa. He joined the club in 2002 and stayed there till 2006, and returned again in 2009. Under his presence, the club has won the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup, the 2014 UEFA Super Cup, the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League, among many others. Despite his more than 200 appearances for the club, in which he proved his worth, we still feel he hasn’t been as celebrated as his fellow mates, which is a sob story.
Standing at 6’2”, number 8 on this list is 22-year-old Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. His journey in the team lasted 4 years, from 2010 to 2014. He was one of the members of the club when it won the 2011-12 La Liga, the 2012 Supercopa de Espana, the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League, among many others. This two times Under-19 and Under-21 Golden Boot winner have made 50 appearances and 11 goals for the club, before moving on to Juventus.
The young 22-year-old Spanish forward player comes at ninth place in our list of 10 of the most under rated Real Madrid players. Beginning his journey with the club in 2011, so far he has made 35 appearances and 8 goals for the club, and we are just counting. Among his presence, the club won the 2013-14 Copa del Rey, the 2011-12 La Liga, the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League, etc. Oddly enough, still he is not seen as one of the bigger names from the club. And we are wondering why!
Starting off the list at number 10 is none other than 22-year-old French central defender Raphael Varane. He has so far made 65 appearances for the club since joining in 2011. In spite of British daily newspaper ‘The Guardian’ included him among the ten most promising young players in Europe in 2014, he still hasn’t made it ‘big’ among the league of players. He was part of the winning team who won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup for the club in 2014.
