Colin Munro Early Life

The youngest of four brothers, Colin Munro grew up in Maidstone, the South African Village in North of Durban. Munro couldn’t get much of the batting even in his own backyard while playing with his brothers. One of his elder brothers, Brett, was exceptional with hitting the ball all around as he was a hockey player on the field, who would smash ball hard miles away.

The leftie-hitter also took hockey as his preferred sports while growing up and cracked into the Kwazulu Natal’s Under-15 team in Durban.

The Kiwi star was only 15 when his family along with him shifted to New Zealand in search of better life and opportunities. The Southpaw got himself enrolled in Pakuranga College and from there onwards his cricketing journey started. First on the cards for Durban-born star was New Zealand Under-19  and then came the first-class debut his way at the age of 19.

Unlike many other cricketers, Munro’s family wasn’t the same as during his childhood his mothers would pay him a couple of extra dollars for smashing the windows as it would encourage him to go out for the boundaries.  Not only this when young Munro hit one onto the rooftop of the house, her mother would buy him a pair of shoes. “If you smashed a window most kids would probably get a growling but Mum said I’d get a couple of extra dollars for the week to try and encourage me to hit boundaries”, old Munro in an interview while recalling the old days. Munro was one of the four brothers, and those days most of them had some serious craze for the game of hockey.

Colin and Tehere knew each other since high school days as they met the high school, while in Durban and later emigrated from South Africa. Both of them were the good friends for the time being and would hang out quite often after the school time. Those days Tehere also used to visit the hockey field to watch Colin play and things moved a step forward later on with her mother convincing both of them to go on with the relation.

As of now the couple, Colin and Tehere have two kids, named Connor and Chloe.

After making it to the New Zealand Under-19, Munro got on to have his first-class debut at the age of 19. The thing which many few of Colin’s fans might know is that Munro was in the teams during those days because of his bowling and nothing special to offer with the bat. In his first-class debut, he took Michael Papps as his first wicket and then added 20 not out off 25 balls while batting at number 11.

For the next three years with even making some brilliant factors, Munro couldn’t get a place in the Auckland side and this made him de-motivated to an extent that he looked on giving up the game of cricket. While narrating this incident after getting a major role in New Zealand team, Munro said, “I scored a lot of runs and took some wickets but still never cracked the Auckland team. I thought about giving the game away then [fellow South African-born batsman] Carl Cachopa was playing in Adelaide and said ‘why don’t you just come over and work there and play some club cricket’?”.

Munro following friend’s advice played for the West Torrens in 2009 and onwards all this worked superbly his way as from there he got shifted to Howick-Pakuranga and later on, he finally got the place in Auckland’s squad, back in 2012 after Colin de Grandhomme got the call up to the Black Caps squad.

The Kiwi star grabbed this long-awaited opportunity with both hands and scored 130 off 115 balls to get prominent on the board. His 269 runs not out against Wellington on Eden Park’s Outer Oval were another of his most important innings, which made sure his arrivals to the New Zealand squad.

He was taken as in ideal T20 player for his urge to hit big across the boundary rope but he failed to make an impact in around the first year of his T20I debut. Things took a turn when he finally exhibited his skills against Bangladesh in November 2013. Munro’s 73 runs not out coming off only 39 balls made him prominent among the cricket lovers all across the globe.

After completing his 16 first-class matches, Munro averaged 58 with the bat and it was more than good enough to get his place in the New Zealand squad. Finally, in 2013, Munro got an opportunity to fill in the boots of James Franklin, who was ruled out of the series due to injury. The former New Zealand Under-19 star couldn’t make any impact and with four years passed, he still has only one Test match to his name.

The Auckland star only managed to score 15 collectively in both the innings after falling on duck in the first innings of his debut Test match.  Even though Munro took 2-wickets in his debut appearance but that wasn’t enough to get him another opportunity in the longer formats.

It will be pertinent to mention here that Munro was grabbed by the Knight Riders after Mumbai Indians released him. With keeping in view his unreliability with the bat, KKR were steady enough to release him.

Colin Munro extended his T20 portfolio with playing BBL  in 2017 for Sydney Sixers but he failed to do something bigger and better he is known for doing in New Zealand domestic circles.  In 3 BBL matches, Munro could only score 27 runs.

Colin Munro’s 50 off 14 balls against Sri Lanka in 2016 came in as the 2nd fastest 50 in T2OIs.

Munro’s 281 runs off 167 balls in Plunket Shield included 23 sixes, and this became the world-record for hitting the most number of 6’s in a first-class match.

In Super Smash competition in 2016, Munro topped the charts with scoring 366 runs in just 11 matches. The star-leftie batsman smashed 24 sixes to make this much runs on the board.

In Plunket Shield, Munro in past three seasons has smashed 85 sixes, which will make you believe in his ability to hit sixes.

The Southpaw has finally got a year contract with the NZC, but as this wasn’t possibly coming his way, his decision to go on as freelance T20 cricketer across the globe was under consideration. “This year, I was very close, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get the New Zealand contract or not. I still want to play all formats and that is why I am here on the ‘A’ trip. So as long as I am in the fray to play all three formats for New Zealand, I am up. As soon as I feel that it’s just about playing some T20s here and there, one got to weigh up options.

“At the moment, I have accepted my NZC contract and I am going to take it year by year. So I have got a year with New Zealand now, hopefully, a new role in terms of going up the order and batting at the top, if it comes to batting in the middle and get the opportunity to bowl a few overs as well,” Colin Munro further added.
