This award has only been won by individual athletes associated with single-participant sports, rather than a player of a team sport background. This award harnesses the ability of sports for the promotion of social changes, and celebrates the excellence in the sporting world. And all the fans are now excited that Cristiano Ronaldo nominated for this prestigious award.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo is not the only soccer player to have been counted for this award. Before Ronaldo, the other footballer who was nominated for it was Kylian Mbappe, whose name appeared on the same list as tennis player Jelena Ostapenko, swimmer Caeleb Dressel, boxer Anthony Joshua, boxer Anthony Joshua, basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo, and golfer Sergio Garcia.
The winner’s name will be revealed on 27th February at Monaco, and the result will be based on the votes given by The Laureus World Sports Academy. Besides Ronaldo, other nominees include Tour de France winning cyclist Chris Froome, Gram Slam winning tennis stars Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, F-1 champion Lewis Hamilton and long distance running champion Mo Farah.
In 2017, Ronaldo made his 400th Real Madrid goal, as well as his 600th goal of his career over all. He became the first footballer to score in three Champions League final matches, besides helping the Spanish club reach a record 12th European title as well as their first La Liga win since 2012.
Speaking about the award, the player said that he is pleased for having been nominated for the prestigious award yet again. He mentioned that Real Madrid had an amazing season in 2016-17, and he knows that he would not have been nominated had it not been for the efforts of his team. So, he took the opportunity to thank all his teammates, as well as the media of the world for placing him among the other candidates who are all strong contenders.
Ronaldo’s former teammate at Real Madrid, and current Laureus ambassador Raul has expressed his happiness to hear Cristiano’s nomination for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year honour, for the fourth time. He added that Ronaldo is an incredible football player and a goal scoring machine, for which he deserves the nomination.
