Emiliano Insúa Early Career

Insúa started his career as a soccer player with youth team named Pinocho in Villa Urquiza in Argentina, before he moved to Buenos Aires, and joined the club named Boca Juniors, based in the city. He didn’t break into La Bombonera’s first-team, and he succeeded in catching the attention of Liverpool’s Frank McParland and Paddy Murphy. He gave some amazing performances for the U-17s as an Argentine, and several clubs became desperate to rope him in. He had made some rare appearances with the club that he played for at that time. He was a youth prodigy, and Boca wanted to make a profit from him. So, they had negotiations with Liverpool, and the defender agreed to be loaned out for a deal of 18 months in November 2006, as his loan period began in January.

Insúa debuted in the first team in a match against Portsmouth in April 2007, though he followed it with just one appearance in the league during that season. His loan deal turned into a permanent shift for the player in August 2007. In the next season, he appeared in only three more league games for the first team, but was successful with the winning team of Premier Reserve League by Gary Ablett. His displays impressed coach Rafael Benítez and he offered him a new deal of three years at one of the richest football clubs Liverpool. In December 2008, the player got the opportunity to appear in a series of matches for Liverpool first team, and he started in six of the club’s opening Premier League matches as well as the first tie of the Champions League run. He made his first goal for Liverpool in a game of Football League Cup against Arsenal in October 2009. In August 2010, he signed with Galatasaray on loan deal of one year with the option to transfer on a permanent basis within the following year in the end of June, after the expiration of the deal. There was a rumour at this point that Insúa might return to Liverpool in the transfer window of January after coach Gheorghe Hagi said that he didn’t require loaned players in his team, and Insúa had allegedly showed his desire to play with the new coach of Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish. Insúa went back to Liverpool for the pre-season training after the loan period. He was barred from entering China because of passport reasons, and Insua had to rejoin the squad of Liverpool in Malaysia. He played in a match in which Liverpool faced a select team of Malaysia, and won with a score of 6–3, to which the player contributed by scoring one goal.

In August 2011, Emiliano Insúa was announced to have signed with Sporting Clube de Portugal, and the fee for the deal of five years remained undisclosed. He debuted for the Portuguese club in September 2011 in the Europa League, in a match against FC Zurich which ended with a score of 20. Insúa scored the first goal in the match. In September 2011, Insúa made the second goal in a 2–1 win over SS Lazio, in a Europa League game. He had to leave the field during the game because of his second yellow card.

In January 2013, it was declared that Insúa would join Atlético Madrid, who had arrived at an agreement with Sporting CP to take in Insúa for a reported transfer fee of €3.5 million. This worked as a qualifier for him in the U20 World Cup, in which he was seen in seven matches, as he conceded only 4 goals in the tournament and helped his team reach victory over the Czech Republic in U20 World Cup final in July 2007. In August 2009, Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez mentioned that Insúa’s progress was being monitored by Diego Maradona who was considering him as a new member of Argentina first team. Eventually, Maradona gave him a call-up in September 2009, to be part of the qualifiers of the World Cup in which Argentina had to face Peru and Uruguay.
