One of the most prominent professional footballers from Portugal today is Fábio Alexandre da Silva Coentrão i.e. Fabio Coentrao. In 2004, Coentrão joined Rio Ave, a club based in his hometown. He was only 16 at that time, and in the next season, he played three Primeira Liga matches for a northern team which would get relegated. He soon established himself as a primary choice in the 2006–07 season, with Rio Ave hardly missing the promotion back. Following a successful in Taça de Portugal, Sporting CP drew the closing line with a 2–1 victory. Coentrao made a goal for his club from 30 metres away. During his tenure with the team, he got nicknamed “Figo das Caxinas.” At the end of the season, he got declared as the Breakthrough Player of the Year, and many teams got interested in him, including Benfica and Sporting. In October 2009, his Benfica contract got an extension till 2015, and his release clause was set at €30million. In December, after playing a few games as a left back for Benfica, he made his first goal in a European competition, as he netted the ball against Belarus‘s FC BATE Borisov, and his team had a 2–1 away victory for the group stage of Europa League.

In February 2010, 20% of his economic rights on Coentrao’s future transfer was sold to Benfica Stars Fund, a third party owner, with a tag of €15million, and the fund making a payment of €3 million. It was a breakthrough year for him, as he played for 2,851 minutes in 43 official matches. The club not only won the league but also the Portuguese League Cup. He became the Portuguese League Breakthrough Player of the Year.

In September 2010, he was completely stable at his club, and his Benfica contract got further extended to 2016. His first ever career brace came in November, as he helped his team gain a 4–3 victory over Olympique Lyonnais in the group stage of the Champions League. In mid-2011, Benfica had extensive negotiations with Real Madrid, and they agreed upon a transfer of Coentrao to the Spanish team, for €30million, and the player signed a contract of six years to join the team in place of Ezequiel Garay who replaced Coentrao in Benfica. After debuting in a pre-season friendly in which he assisted Karim Benzema, his first official matches took place against Barcelona for Supercopa de España. He played as a defensive midfielder in the first half, and a left back in the second game.

Coentrão’s La Liga debut was in August 2011 against Zaragoza, as a central midfielder, and the match resulted in a 6–0 victory. He has been seen plying in various positions and José Mourinho even sent him to play as the right back against Sporting de Gijón and Barcelona. It was his first league win. His first goal for the Spanish team came in December 2012, as he netted a pass by Cristiano Ronaldo, ending the match with a result of 2–2.

In September 2013, Real Madrid agreed to loan him to Manchester United, but the agreement fell through as they could not successfully rope in Guilherme Siqueira as a replacement from Granada. Coentrao joined the youth level team of Portugal in 2005. Eventually, he went on to represent Portugal’s U-20 World Cup in 2007; the same year, he also made it to the U-21 team.
