GGG, Alvarez not Impressed by Mayweather vs. McGregor “Sideshow”Posted By: Sourav Das | July 13, 2017
The super fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor has been one of the most polarizing events in the sports world since it was announced, and a lot of famous people have come out either for it or against it. Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, who are scheduled to have a super fight of their own a month after the Mayweather McGregor fight, have made it clear they aren’t impressed with the matchup. Despite their opinions, betting odds for the Mayweather vs. McGregor super fight has generated a lot of interest from sports fans all over the world.
GGG, Alvarez not Impressed by Mayweather vs. McGregor “Sideshow”
While there is no denying that the GGG vs. Alvarez fight is the better fight, the Mayweather vs McGregor fight is generating more interest and will make more money because both fighters have a huge fan base that has been clamoring for the fight for over a year.
While trying to promote their fight, GGG told reporters that the fight between Mayweather and McGregor is just a spectacle, and recommended that if fans wanted to see a real fight, they should watch the GGG vs. Canelo bout instead.
GGG said the Mayweather fight was a side show and it isn’t for him. He added that the fight was only good for both fighters because they will make a lot of money from a business standpoint, but it is generally bad for boxing.
GGG also said his fight against Alvarez, on the other hand, is real boxing that respects the sport and is good for boxing in the long run because it is a true fight.
Alvarez, whose only professional loss came at the hands of Mayweather, said he didn’t have much to say about the fight, but fans would know which fight to watch of they want to see a real professional fight.
Both fighters also said they don’t think McGregor has a chance to win the fight because Mayweather retired as the best fighter of his generation with a 49-0 record and has battled some of the best boxers of his time.
McGregor, on the other hand, is an MMA fighter that has no boxing experience and isn’t going to transform into a world-class boxer in a matter of months.
Some critics have pointed out that GGG and Alvarez, as well as Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes, Alvarez, are upset the Mayweather fight will come close to doing the type of numbers the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight did two years ago, which could reduce the amount of money the GGG vs Alvarez fight ends up making.
However, if that is the case, the two boxers have nobody to blame but themselves and De La Hoya because boxing fans have been clamoring for that fight for years, but De La Hoya kept pushing it back, scheduling Alvarez to fight the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Liam Smith, both of whom Alvarez outclassed easily.
Interestingly, UFC President Dana White revealed that De La Hoya was lobbying for Alvarez to fight McGregor a year ago, but now that his fighter didn’t get the shot, thinks the fight is a farce.
Regardless of what GGG, Alvarez, and De La Hoya think, the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight will be a success and the winner of the Alvarez vs. GGG fight will likely be lobbying to fight Mayweather once it’s all said and done.
