João Moutinho is a professional football player who represents the national team of Portugal, besides playing with AS Monaco FC, mainly as the central midfielder, though he also operates as the defensive or attacking midfielder, as well as on the flanks.

João Moutinho began his career as a professional football player with the Portuguese club Sporting CP, before he moved to Porto in 2010 and helped the two clubs to win 12 prominent titles combined. After three years, he signed with Monaco for a contract amount of €25 million. He has represented the national team of Portugal in the 2014 World Cup as well as in three European Championship campaigns, of which the team won the 2016 edition.

João Moutinho Youth Career

In 1996, Moutinho joined Portimonense SC, a club based in his hometown, when he was not even 10 years of age, and showed great promise there, playing till 2000, after which he joined Sporting Clube de Portugal at the age of 13, where he continued his soccer training.

Moutinho completed his soccer education at Sporting, during 2000-04, and became part of Sporting CP B in 2003-04. In the pre-season of 2004–05, when he was only 17 years of age, he received an invitation from José Peseiro, the manager of the team, to join the main squad. After playing some matches there, came back to the junior team under Paulo Bento, and helped it to gain the national title during that season. At the start of 2005, he received a call to play in Portuguese Cup, and appeared for 20 minutes against F.C. Pampilhosa. He debuted in Primeira Liga in January in a 3–0 victory over Gil Vicente F.C. playing in a #28 jersey that Cristiano Ronaldo previously wore.

His consistent performances helped him become a regular in different positions, and gave powerful displays in the final stages of the tournament, particularly UEFA Cup, winning the with Man of the Match awards twice, helping the Lions in reaching the final. He made a contribution of 15 league matches, with Sporting finishing second, and his contract was extended that summer for another year. During Moutinho’s first full Sporting season, he showed progress and consistency, and became one of the best in the runner-up final position of Sporting. He incidentally made the final goal for his team of that campaign, in a match against SC Braga which ended in a 1–0 victory that led his team to be at the Champions League for the club.

In 2006–07, Moutinho became the vice-captain when he was just 19. In the next season, he became the second youngest captain of the club. During that season, Moutinho, was often seen moving from his usual position of a midfielder “behind-the-forwards”, and moved to the right flank, delivering amazing performances. He became a club symbol soon, and one of the best players of the league. In 2008–09, a deal with Everton fell through, and Moutinho was continued to be part of Sporting CP, missing three league games, and appearing almost 50 times in total, with the club ending up as the runner-up. Moutinho also netted the ball for his team in the round-of-16 match in Champions League against FC Bayern Munich. His team had an aggregate loss of 1–12.

João Moutinho Monaco Career

In May 2013, Moutinho reportedly joined AS Monaco FC in a dual transfer deal with James Rodríguez for a combined transfer fee of €70 million and €25 million for just Moutinho. He officially debuted for the club in September, and set up the two goals in a 2–1 victory over Olympique de Marseille, as Monaco reached the top position of the Ligue 1 table. He was a first-choice in the debut tournament, and his team ended up as the runners-up of Ligue 2. His contributed to a 1–1 draw to Stade de Reims, in September.

In September 2014, he made the only goal for Monaco’s first game in Champions League since 2005 which ended in a loss to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He made 52 appearances that season, and his team ended in the third place. In March 2017, Moutinho made a stunning goal as he stood outside the penalty box and curled the pass from Bernardo Silva to the top left corner, leading to a 2–1 league victory over FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

He joined the junior team of Portugal in 2003, becoming a full international at Portugal at 18. He debuted in August 2005 in a 2–0 friendly victory over Egypt. Since the World Cup 2006, he has been a regular. In May 2008, he made his first goal for Portugal against Georgia in a friendly match that ended with a score of 2–0. He got selected for the Euro 2008 squad-of-23, and he assisted Raul Meireles with a goal in the 2–0 win against Turkey in the opening game.

Moutinho played in two European Under-21 Championship tournaments, and scored against Germany in 2006. In both of them, Portugal left in the group stage. He was also part of the backup of six players in the World Cup 2010. Moutinho appeared in all Euro 2012 matches. In the semi-final match against Spain, Moutinho missed the shot during penalty shootout and his team lost with a score of 2–4.
