He started his football journey with the youth academy system of his native side SC Borgfeld in 2001, at the age of just five. He then moved to the youth system of FC Oberneuland in 2009. After spending two seasons there, he finally moved to the youth setup of VfL Wolfsburg in 2011, at the age of 15. Upon his arrival at Wolfsburg, he went through a rigorous training program and escalated through several youth squads. His performance for the youth team caught the attention of several big football clubs all over Europe, and media started calling him the football prodigy of Germany looking at his miraculous skills.

During the January transfer window of 2014, he signed his first professional five-year contract with Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a transfer fee of €350,000.
