In the year 2001, when Pepe was 18 years of age, he moved to Madeira in Portugal to join Portugal to sign with Marítimo. He spent most of the 2001-2002 season in the B team of Maritimo. After his first season, he was promoted to the main team in 2002-2003, with Anatoliy Byshovets as the manager. Pepe was seen almost in all the games, and he played in various positions, including the role of defensive midfielder. During the pre-season, he was permitted to get a 2-week training with Sporting CP, before a deal for his transfer got discussed. But, the clubs could not agree on the terns of finance and the negotiations fell through. In summer 2004, Pepe joined Porto in exchange for €1 million, and three players, i.e. Evaldo, Tonel and Antonielton Ferreira. During his first season, manager Víctor Fernández used Pepe a backup. Pepe has been associated with real Madrid for over a decade, having joined the team in the year 2007. It was a glorious chapter in his soccer life, which started with a 5-year deal with the club which helped Porto earned 30 million EUR as transfer fees. His tenure at Real Madrid was full of many controversies, from fights to injuries. There were questions about his performances, as well. However, even though he was constantly under the scanner for his performances, conduct and injuries, Real Madrid still won several titles during his tenure, whether or not he was present for all matches for the entire time.

Pepe joined Portugal’s national team in the year 2007, and has been associated with the team ever since. His father claims that he was contacted to represent the national football team of his native Brazil, in 2006. But the player refused to join, saying that he would only represent Portugal after getting citizenship there. In August 2007, he got the call up to join Portugal, appearing in the Euro 2008 qualifier. In World Cup 2010, he was often seen playing the role of a defensive midfielder. He was seen making a goal in the Euro 2012 in the second group match, as well as in the semi-final. In 2014 World Cup, Pepe received a red card for headbutting Thomas Muller, and Portugal lost 0-4.
