According to recent reports by Telegraph Sports, the Premier League and the English Football League have launched the initiative to look into the regulation applicable towards football agents in the middle of growing concerns regarding the noticeable rise in the amount of money being paid as fees to the agents or intermediaries who represent players. And it seems Premier League is quite determined to investigate growing fees of the agents.

Last month, the EFL wrote to all the clubs of the Championship, along with League One as well as League Two, and has asked for monitoring of the rapidly changing relationship maintained by players, agents and clubs. This is after the intermediary regulations got reworked in 2015. Telegraph Sport believes that the clubs are getting worried about agents pocketing exorbitant amounts of money, when transfer deals and negotiations take place.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the issue of possible conflict of interests, with dual representation, through which an agent legally acts on behalf of the player as well as the club, when there’s a negotiation. The reviewing process by Premier League to take a look at the part played by the agents was actually started by the clubs. This process involves the analysis of the agent regulations that are in force in the other sports.

The analysis will be presented before the Football Association. It controls the governing of agents since the regulation of the industry by FIFA in 2015 to increase transparency. Most recently, it was brought to notice that the agent of Alexis Sanchez is going to get a fee of over £10 million, as a result of the proposed move of the Chilean player to Manchester United, and after it was reported that the agent of Ross Barkley pocketed around £7 million for helping him transfer from Chelsea to Everton.

The sum that English clubs pay to the agents rose by around 40 percent, reaching £220 million between 2016 and 2017. During the period of about a year, the EPL paid £174 million to the agents, jumping from £130 million last year. In the meanwhile, Championship clubs paid £42.4 million to the agents, reflecting a massive increase of over 60 percent.
