Wayne Rooney, facing his former club, shot wide for Everton in the first half and was denied by David De Gea at the start of the second. Everton’s resistance faded when Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled the lead, converting Romelu Lukaku’s pass on 83 minutes. Lukaku made up for a missed chance on 26 minutes with an 89th-minute effort from Jesse Lingard’s pass. Anthony Martial converted a stoppage-time penalty after a handball by Morgan Schneiderlin. Three goals in the last 10 minutes helped Manchester United go level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 win over Everton.
Chelsea 0 – 0 Arsenal – September 17, 2017
It was a goalless first half, which had a couple of big chances. Pedro was put through for the hosts but was denied by Petr Cech, while Aaron Ramsey hit a post for Arsenal, with Alexandre Lacazette volleying the rebound. After the first half also, opportunities were less despite the introductions of Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard. At 87 minutes, David Luiz received a straight red card for a high tackle on Sead Kolasinac but the Gunners could not make their advantage count. Finally, Arsenal ended a five-match losing streak at Stamford Bridge as they drew 0-0 with 10-man Chelsea.
Tottenham Hotspur 0 – 0 Swansea City – September 16, 2017
Tottenham spent much of the match deep in Swansea’s half, particularly in the second period, but Harry Kane hit the crossbar with their best chance as the visitors claimed a point. Kane tested Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski with a ferocious 40-yard free-kick and Son Heung-min hit the side netting in the opening period. After the break, Kane hit the bar following Fabianski’s save from Son. Kane and Kieran Trippier both fired narrowly wide late on as the hosts piled on the pressure. Thus, Swansea City made Tottenham Hotspur wait for their first Premier League win at Wembley Stadium with an excellent defensive display in a goalless draw.
Huddersfield Town 1 – 1 Leicester City – September 16, 2017
Huddersfield Town, the hosts had the better of the chances in the first half and they took the lead just after the break when Laurent Depoitre powered his way into Leicester territory and fired. The lead lasted only 4 minutes, as Jamie Vardy claimed his 4th goal of the season after Chris Lowe fouled Andy King in the area. Vardy had a great chance to seal victory on the 69th minute from Riyad Mahrez’s cross but with the goal three yards out, he could not get a touch on the ball. Finally, the result was, Jamie Vardy scored from the penalty spot to give his Leicester City side a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town.
Liverpool 1 – 1 Burnley – September 16, 2017
Emre Can, the new summer signing was on hand to control a terrific pass, bringing it down in the area before Mohamed Salah smashed past Nick Pope on 30 minutes. 3 minutes earlier, Burnley went ahead when Robbie Brady’s flick to Scott Arfield on the edge of the area and he converted it into a goal by firing it to the bottom corner. Philippe Coutinho showed flashes of quality on his first start of the Premier League season. Overall, the result was, Mohamed Salah rescued a point for Liverpool as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Burnley at Anfield.
Newcastle United 2 – 1 Stoke City – September 16, 2017
Christian Atsu had given the home side the lead on 19 minutes. Then, Newcastle’s defender Matt Ritchie headed in a corner via a deflection off Kevin Wimmer on 68 minutes to give Newcastle their third win in a row. Xherdan Shaqiri replied for Stoke on 57 minutes, controlling the ball before curling a low effort from 30 yards into the bottom corner. Jamaal Lascelles scored the winner for the second straight match as Newcastle United edged past Stoke City 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Watford 0 – 6 Manchester City – September 16, 2017
In this match, the striker scored his 6th Premier League hat-trick and assisted another goal in a 6-0 win that takes Pep Guardiola’s side top of the table. Aguero opened the scoring on 27 minutes when he headed in Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick to score in an eighth consecutive away start. After the break, Nicolas Otamendi scored from another Silva assist (one from Gabriel Jesus), Aguero scored his 3rd with a fine dribble and finish, while Raheem Sterling won and scored a penalty to cap a dominant win.
West Bromwich Albion 0 – 0 West Ham United – September 16, 2017
Baggies midfielder Gareth Barry equalled Ryan Giggs’s all-time appearance record of 632 matches and became the first player ever to make 600 starts. Barry nearly marked the occasion with a goal on 11 minutes but his header from a Matt Phillips corner could only ripple the roof of the net. Pedro Obiang then came close to a goal-of-the-season contender when his shot from 40 yards caught out Ben Foster and smashed the crossbar. Finally, Gareth Barry made Premier League history as West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United drew 0-0 at The Hawthorns.
Crystal Palace 0 – 1 Southampton – September 16, 2017
The home side started on the front foot but Saints took the lead on 6 minutes when Davis slotted the ball into the bottom corner after Wayne Hennessey diverted Dusan Tadic’s shot into his path. Southampton rode out the pressure and could have doubled their lead only for Hennessey to save from Cedric Soares. Hence, Steven Davis scored an early winner as Southampton defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 in Roy Hodgson’s first match as Eagles manager.
AFC Bournemouth 2 – 1 Brighton and Hove Albion – September 16, 2017
Solly March headed Brighton in front from Pascal Gross’ 55th minute cross, Ibe entered the fray and supplied two skilful assists. In the 73rd minute Ibe put through Defoe with a clever pass, and the striker drilled in his first AFC Bournemouth goal since May 2001. Thus AFC Bournemouth earned a 2-1 win and Defoe’s strike earned AFC Bournemouth’s first points of the season, putting them within one point of Brighton.
