The Spanish giants had arrived at the halfway point in the Spanish League season with nothing but wins in their kitty, and a lead of nine points over Atletico Madrid in the second place. Valencia lags behind by 11 points, and defending champion Real Madrid are a massive 19 points behind Barca. The comeback gave this season’s La Liga chart leaders their first La Liga victory at Anoeta Stadium, since the year 2007. Thus, they not only managed to break a streak of five losses and two draws, but also continued their winning streak this season, across all the competitions, gaining victory in 29 matches since their last loss in August, in the Spanish Super Cup.
Real Sociedad seemed all set to extend their dominance over Barca at their home ground after the early goals scored in their favour by Juanmi Jimenez and Willian Jose. However, Suarez set Paulinho up before the halftime of the match, and the Uruguayan international himself scored two goals in the second half. Messi took over after that, securing three points with a free kick which he scored when the match had five minutes left to end and also secured his position of being the top scorer of La Liga season 2017-18.
Sevilla’s loss streak arrived at five back-to-back rounds after their 1-0 loss against Alaves on Sunday in La Liga. This was the second consecutive loss of Sevilla in the Spanish league, with the Italian coach Vincenzo Montella replacing Eduardo Berizzo. The side has not shown any improvement under the former coach of AC Milan. Sevilla is now in the sixth place, as Villarreal pushed them down and climbed to the 5th position.
Meanwhile, Barcelona is continuing on its quest to keep winning, with new members on the team n the January transfer window, and the most talked about among their recent members is Philippe Coutinho, whom they have brought in from the English Premier League.
