Claudio Kranevitter is a professional footballer who represents the Argentine national football team, besides playing for Zenit Saint Petersburg, the Russian soccer club. He plays the role of the defensive midfielder of his teams.

Kranevitter fought poverty in his early life, and eventually succeeded in emerging as a professional player of international stature. He mainly plays as a defensive midfielder, and Kranevitter is highly appreciated for his style he uses to break up play, besides his skills to shield the defence and set the pace of his team.

He is not a player who is too physical, and is known for his clean tackles which are times beautifully to help his team and stun the audience. He is also noted for his amazing displays of defensive positioning. Kranevitter’s style of playing has often led to comparisons with Javier Mascherano, both of whom have a similar style of playing, and are both youth graduates from River Plate club.

Claudio Kranevitter Youth Career

Claudio Kranevitter began his youth career in San Martín de Tucumán, a team based in his birth town. However, Kranevitter’s condition in the face of poverty led him to leave the youth program at San Martín de Tucumán when he was only 12 years of age. But, within two years, during a trial, he succeeded in impressing the fraternity enough to let him join the River Plate in 2007, when he was just 14. In the beginning, he got assigned to be a reserve, and he also became a part of the U-20 squad, during the winning campaign of the team in the U-20 Copa Libertadores of 2012. In the month of December during the same year, he debuted for this team, as he got introduced into the match during the second-half as a substitute. The match, in which they played against Lanús, ended in a win of 1–0 for the team.

Kranevitter stayed with the youth program of River Plate from 2007 to 2012, during which was first part of the reserve, after which he joined the U-20 squad  U-20 Copa Libertadores of 2012 which the team went on to win. In December, he played his first match for the team.

The new manager of the club, Ramón Díaz, was highly impressed by Kranevitter’s displays, and he promoted to the main team. Although he was a backup in the beginning, he soon played in 30 games of the season of 2013–14. He started in 16 of these, as he overcame Cristian Ledesma, to whom he was a backup, in the middle of the season.

In September 2014, when he was already a regular as a starter in the matches, Kranevitter went through a metatarsus injury, and had to stay out till the next year. But, in October, he his conviction for the sport came across as he took to training with crutches. And soon enough, he was back in action, in November. He went on to be used in both legs of the finals of Copa Sudamericana 2014.

In August 2015, River Plate had an agreement with Atlético Madrid of the Spanish League, to sell of Kranevitter. It was rumoured that the transfer cost the La Liga team a sum of €8 million. It was soon declared officially that he was part of the team. However, he was immediately sent to River on loan to play with them till December.

In January 2016, Kranevitter was assigned to become a member of the main squad, and the player got to play with jersey no. 8. In the month of February of the year, he was seen debuting as a representative of the main category, as he was seen as a substitute for Fernando Torres, the goalscorer n the match against Getafe CF which ended in a win of 1–0 for Kranevitter’s team. In July 2016, he joined Sevilla FC on loan, in a deal that would last the entire season.

In August 2017, Claudio Kranevitter shifted to FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, a club in the Russian Premier League, on a contract of 4 years. He has made 15 appearances for the team so far.

Kranevitter has been associated with Argentina since 2012, and started representing the U-20 team of the country in 2013 in the South American Youth Football Championship. He was seen playing in three games of the tournament, as he started in all of them. However, his side could not go beyond the group stage of the tournament. In August 2015, he received his first up to join the main squad and represent it in two friendly matches against Bolivia and Mexico. He was a replacement, filling in for Lucas Biglia. His full debut on an international scale came in September, as he started in a match that ended with a score of 7–0 for his team.

He received the nomination to be part of the squad of Copa América in 2016, and was a member of the Argentine team which went to the final. In the 57th min of the final game in which his team faced Chile, he had to be substituted. Chile eventually went on to win with a score of 4–2 in the penalty shootout round.

Claudio Kranevitter was born in San Miguel de Tucumán in northern Argentina, and started his career with the youth program of San Martín de Tucumán which is based on his hometown. However, his parents’ financial condition led him to give up on his dreams, when he was just 12, though it was not for too long, as he got invited to join River Plate at 14. He used to play golf, too, when he was, and he even mentioned once that if he was not a footballer, he would probably have become a golf player. He also has a sibling named Gastón Kranevitter, who is also a footballer.
