Alario started his soccer career at Colón, a club based in his birth town. When he joined the club, it was battling relegation. He debuted in the Argentine Primera División in June 2011, in a match that ended with a 0–1 loss to Arsenal. He scored his first goal for his club in March 2014, in the form of a penalty in the fourth minute, and it was the only score for the team in the match which led to their win over Tigre. In May 2015, he scored two goals in a 3–2 victory for Colón, as it was the first away victory of the team during the season. Eventually, he went on to give some amazing displays for the team, which looked particularly good, considering the situation of the club at the point of time when he joined them.

In June 2015, Alario signed with River Plate, as the fourth player to join the club in that season, signing a contract of four years for a transfer fee of 2.25 million Argentine pesos. He needed little time for jumping into action, as he debuted in July, in a match that came to a close with a tie of 1–1 with Temperley. A couple of days later, he scored an equaliser for a 1–1 draw with Paraguay’s Club Guaraní during the second leg of the semi-finals of Copa Libertadores, as a turned a pass by Tabaré Viúdez into a goal, earning a win of 3–1 on aggregate. In August, during the final’s second leg, he turned a cross from Leonel Vangioni and opened the scorebook, with his team winning 3–0 against Tigres UANL.

Around two weeks after River earned a victory in the continental championship, Alario had to leave the ground in a match that led to a loss to Estudiantes de La Plata for his team with a score of 2–1. He scored his debut goals for the team as a hat-trick on in September, ending the match with a win of 4–1 over Nueva Chicago. In October, he made the only goal of the match which helped the team earn a victory at Vélez Sarsfield.

In December, during the semi-finals of FIFA Club World Cup, Alario made the only goal to beat Sanfrecce Hiroshima. Within a few days, he was seen in the final, in which his team had a loss of 3–0 loss to FC Barcelona. In August 2016, Alario made another goal, and ended the goal to help win an international title, taking over Recopa Sudamericana 2016. He has been touted as one of the best strikers in Argentina. With River Plate, he won the Copa Libertadores in 2014-15, as well as two Recopa Sudamericana, in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Since he joined the team, Argentine has succeeded in winning the Superclásico de las Américas of 2017.

Lucas Alario was born in the small city of Tostado in Santa Fe, Argentina. His parents are Mónica Armando, Abel Alario. In 2010, he moved 200 miles away to Santa Fe to join Atletico Colon. After four years there, he shifted to Argentine capital Buenos Aires, to join River Plate.
