Bartra started his football journey while joining his native club RCD Espanyol in 2001. After a single season, he joined the La Masia youth academy of Barcelona in 2002, at the age of just 11. He went through a rigorous training schedule at the academy and made progression through several age-level squads. He earned his promotion to the Barcelona reserve team in 2009 and spent three seasons there. During that time, he made 81 appearances for the reserve squad in the Segunda División. His performance for the B team caught the attention of the first-team officials in 2010.

Bartra signed a four-year contract with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on 3rd June 2016, for a transfer fee of €8 million. He made his debut for the club in the DFL-Supercup match against FC Bayern Munich on 14th August 2016. The following month, he scored his first goal for Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League group-stage match against Legia Warsaw on 15th September 2016.
