It was at Sporting that he has spent most of his career, playing in more than 400 matches, since he made his first appearance on the first team when he was just 18 years old. His first cap for his national team was in 2010, when he was around 22. He played for Portugal in World Cup 2014, as well as European Championships three times, of which the club won in 2016.

Rui Patrício’s interest in football began at an early stage, and he became a part of Leiria e Marrazes, the team based in his hometown, when he was around nine years old. In the beginning of his career, he played as a striker. His youth career at Leiria e Marrazes lasted till 2000, when, at the age of 12, he managed to impress Sporting Clube de Portugal with his goal, and led them to sign him.

Patricio’s senior career began in 2006, when he joined Sporting CP. In 2007–08, Patrício became the starter. In November 2007, Patricio debuted in Champions League, in a group stage match at Manchester United in which his team lost. In the off-season of 2008, there were rumours about his transfer to Inter Milan in Italy, but, this transfer did not take place, and in the same season, he saved the penalty shot by Lucho González in the final match of Portuguese Supercup.

In December 2012, Patrício received the award as Sporting CP’s Footballer of the Year for the second time. In October 2014, he made a penalty save, a shot by Jackson Martínez, and helped knock Porto out of Portuguese Cup, leading his team to win. In October 2016, Patrício was among 30 footballers to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or of 2016. In February 2017, he played in 400th competitive match of his career with Sporting CP, and earned a Man of the Match honour for his display against Rio Ave FC.

After being associated with the youth team of Portugal since 2003, Patricio joined in the U-21 side of Portugal in 2007, Luiz Felipe Scolari, the coach of the senior team, called him in January 2008 for a friendly appearance, though he could not leave the bench; in May, Patricio got selected for the for Euro 2008 squad, though he did not play in that tournament.  His senior career with Portugal began in 2010, when he was part of the backup list of players for the World Cup 2010. He debuted in November 2010, in a friendly against Spain.

Paulo Bento, the team boss, had him play as the starter, and he finished the qualifying campaign of Euro 2012. Portugal reached the final stages with Patricio as the starter, who conceded four goals in a matter of five games. Patrício became part of the squad of 23 men for World Cup 2014, and debuted in the tournament in the first match against Germany. Patrício’s 50th match was during the 2016 Euro. He saved an attempt by Jakub Błaszczykowski during the penalty shootout, in which Portugal won.
