He joined the youth academy system of his native club AD Complutense in 1999, at the age of just 9. He then moved to the academy system of Real Madrid in 2001 for better training and exposure. Born in Madrid, to his parents José María Fernández and Maite Iglesias, Nacho is of pure Spanish descent. He grew up in the Spanish capital while playing football with his younger brother Álex.
